Power Transmission Couplings: Types and Uses

Mechanical power transmission couplings are designed to connect industrial motors to other pieces of machinery, but they serve a variety of secondary functions as well. They can help compensate for and minimize the damage from extreme operating conditions, and protect more expensive equipment components from sustaining damage. There are several different types of couplings, each with their own set of advantages.

Chain Couplings

As the name suggests, chain couplings connect driving and driven equipment with a roller chain element. When using chain couplings, you must take several things into consideration. First, you must choose couplings large enough to accommodate the application. Second, you must remember to use covers if your couplings are to be operated in moist conditions. Third, you must make sure that everything is properly lubricated. 

Elastomeric Couplings

Jaw Couplings

Mechanical power transmission jaw couplings use rigid jaw hubs to connect driving and driven equipment. Some jaw couplings have a flexible component called a spider. Gear Couplings
